The TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026: what is different and what it means for you
On 21 January 2026, ETS redesigned TOEFL iBT. Section time fell to about 90 minutes, Reading and Listening became adaptive in two stages, and Writing and Speaking gained new task types. Scores now run from 1 to 6 in half bands, with a comparable 0 to 120 score reported for two years. Scores from earlier tests stay valid for two years from their test date.
The TOEFL iBT you hear about from friends, forums and second-hand books is not the test you will sit. On 21 January 2026, ETS changed its length, its tasks and its score scale. Candidates who miss this spend weeks rehearsing tasks that no longer exist, or misread a requirement written on the old scale and aim too low.
What changed on 21 January 2026?
Five areas changed, and each one affects how you prepare.
| Area | Version from July 2023 | From 21 January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Score scale | 0 to 120 total; 0 to 30 per section | 1 to 6 per section and overall, in half bands |
| Length | Just under 2 hours | About 90 minutes of section time |
| Reading and Listening | Fixed sets of longer passages and lectures | Shorter tasks; two-stage adaptive |
| Writing | An integrated essay and an academic discussion | Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion |
| Speaking | Four tasks, including integrated tasks | Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview |
The four sections stay the same: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. What sits inside them is different. ETS still advises allowing about two hours in total for the appointment.
What does adaptive mean for Reading and Listening?
Both sections now run in two stages. The first set of questions measures your level. Your answers then send you to an easier or a harder second set.
Section length therefore varies a little: the test specifications list a 7-minute lower module and an 11-minute upper module in Listening. The number of items you see varies too. If the questions become harder halfway through, that is a good sign, not a reason to panic.
Writing and Speaking do not adapt. Every candidate sees the same number of tasks there. The full section-by-section map is in the TOEFL test format and task types.
Which tasks are new, and which old materials should you drop?
The redesign replaced long, integrated tasks with shorter ones.
- Reading now uses Complete the Words, where you restore missing letters in a short text, plus short everyday texts and academic passages of up to about 200 words.
- Listening uses short exchanges, conversations, campus announcements and academic talks of up to about 250 words. Recordings play once.
- Writing dropped the integrated essay. You now order words in Build a Sentence and write an email, and the academic discussion post remains.
- Speaking dropped the four old tasks. You repeat sentences in Listen and Repeat, then answer questions in Take an Interview.
Any book, course or app that shows practice scores out of 120, a 20-minute integrated essay or four speaking tasks was written for the old test. Use it for general English practice if you like, but never as a mock test. Before you buy anything new, check that it names the 2026 task types and reports scores on the 1 to 6 scale.
How does the new 1 to 6 scale work?
You now receive a score from 1 to 6, in half bands, for each section. Your overall score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. ETS gives the example of an average of 5.25, which becomes 5.5.
Take a profile of Reading 5.0, Listening 5.5, Writing 4.5 and Speaking 5.0. The average is 5.0, so the overall score is 5.0 on the 1 to 6 scale.
For two years after January 2026, your report also shows a comparable overall score on the old 0 to 120 scale. ETS states that institutions are updating their requirements at different times, and that both formats appear on your official report. Many universities still publish minimums on the 0 to 120 scale, such as 90 overall or 22 in Speaking.
ETS publishes a comparison table for these cases. On it, 22 in Speaking falls within band 4, so a target of 4.5 on the 1 to 6 scale gives you a margin. The full method is in the TOEFL score scale explained.
What happens to scores from before January 2026?
Scores from tests taken before 21 January 2026 remain valid for two years from their test date. ETS cannot report or verify any score after that. Some institutions set a stricter limit linked to the date of your application, so read each rule.
MyBest scores combine your best result in each section from valid tests in the last two years. The change of scale affects them in two ways:
- If your report uses the 0 to 120 scale, MyBest on that report includes only 0 to 120 scores.
- If you test again on the new scale, MyBest converts your older scores to the 1 to 6 scale.
So an older Reading score can still count alongside a newer Speaking score, provided both tests fall within two years. Not every institution accepts MyBest scores, so check each one before you rely on them. Retakes and score reviews are covered in score review, MyBest and retakes.
If your older scores expire before your latest deadline, plan a new attempt now. Prepare for it on the 2026 format, not the one you sat before.
What should you do about the change?
Work through four checks in this order, because each one decides the next.
- Audit your materials. Remove anything built on the 0 to 120 scale or the old tasks from your mock-test pile.
- Read each requirement's scale. Note whether each institution states its minimum on the 1 to 6 scale or the 0 to 120 scale. If the wording is unclear after the change, ask the institution to confirm it in writing. Where institutions differ, prepare for the highest requirement in each section.
- Measure yourself on the new test. Take one official practice test under timed conditions and record your score for each section on the 1 to 6 scale. Plan from that profile, not from your result on the old test.
- Date your older scores. If you hold scores from before 21 January 2026, write down when they reach two years and compare that date with your latest deadline.
These facts were checked against ETS's official pages and the 2026–27 Information Bulletin in October 2026. Chapter 12 of the book turns every requirement on your list into a target score table on both scales. Chapter 15 adds a validity calendar for older and newer scores. Once your targets are clear, size the work with how long to prepare for TOEFL.
- Check every book, course and app you own, and set aside any that report practice scores out of 120.
- Open each institution's requirement page and note whether its minimum is on the 1 to 6 scale or the 0 to 120 scale.
- Take one official practice test written for the 2026 format and record your score for each section on the 1 to 6 scale.
- If you hold scores from before 21 January 2026, put their two-year expiry date in your calendar.
